SMALL CYCLADES
The Small Cyclades lie mainly south of Naxos, between Naxos and Amorgos, with Donoussa further northeast. Known for turquoise water, sandy beaches, and a relaxed pace, the group includes Iraklia, Schinoussa, Donoussa, Ano and Kato Koufonisi, the uninhabited Keros, and smaller islets.
Each has its own appeal. Iraklia offers rugged walking trails, quiet villages and the impressive Cave of Agios Ioannis. Schinoussa combines sheltered beaches with excellent food, particularly its local fava. Donoussa has a bohemian atmosphere, scenic paths and beautiful swimming spots.
Ano Koufonisi is the liveliest, with a waterfront village, coastal walks, sea caves and dazzling beaches. Nearby Kato Koufonisi offers wilder shores reached by boat.
There are no airports, so visitors arrive by ferry, often via Naxos or Amorgos. Small guesthouses, leisurely taverna meals and days spent swimming or walking define a holiday here, although popular Koufonisi can become crowded during peak summer, particularly around its village and beaches.

What to expect
A visit to the Small Cyclades centres on swimming, walking and leisurely taverna meals, with each island offering a different atmosphere.
There are no airports, so arrival is by ferry, often via Naxos. The Express Skopelitis connects the islands with Naxos and Amorgos, but services vary by destination and season.
On Ano Koufonisi, the inhabited island where visitors stay within the Koufonisia subgroup, most people get around on foot, by bicycle or aboard seasonal beach boats.
Elsewhere, transport is limited, so check whether your accommodation provides transfers.
Ano Koufonisi is the busiest and liveliest, particularly in July and August. Iraklia is quieter, Schinoussa attracts yacht visitors, and Donoussa has a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere.
Follow Ano Koufonisi’s coastal path to Pori, swim in natural rock pools or take a boat to neighbouring Kato Koufonisi.
Iraklia offers hiking trails, Agios Ioannis Cave and a submerged wartime aircraft at Alimia. Schinoussa suits beach hopping and long lunches, while Donoussa combines sandy bays and marked walking routes.
