What to expect with the weather

Summer, June to August
Hot, dry, and bright. Expect long days, clear skies, packed beaches, and the occasional heatwave that will have you sprinting to the nearest taverna shade. -
Shoulder seasons, April to May and September to October
Warm but not oppressive. Ideal for walking, road trips, and exploring without the furnace heat. Seas are cooler in spring and perfect in early autumn. -
Winter, November to March
Cooler, wet, and far more variable. Mainland regions get proper cold snaps, the islands get windy and damp, and storms can roll in quickly. Ferries run less often and many tourist areas hibernate. -
Winds, especially the Meltemi
Strong northerlies that hit the Aegean from May to November. They cool things down but can be disruptive for ferries, especially in the Cyclades.
Is it warm enough to swim in April, May, September, or October?
April is usually too cold for most people, unless you are used to it.
May is hit-or-miss: warm days but cooler seas.
September is generally perfect, with warm water and warm sunny days.
October varies a lot by year and region, cooler but still swimmable on many islands until mid to late month.
How hot does it really get in summer?
Hot. Expect high 30s regularly and low 40s during heatwaves. The sun is intense, shade is your best friend, and sightseeing needs early starts.
Islands are breezier, cities hold the heat, and the Acropolis at noon is not recommended.
Does the Meltemi wind affect travel plans?
Yes, sometimes. It can blow anytime from May to November, with its strongest periods in July to September. It cools things down but can disrupt ferries, high-speed ferries in the Cyclades. Big ferries usually still run unless the wind is extreme.
What is winter in Greece actually like?
Nothing like summer. Expect rain, wind, chilly days, and short daylight hours. Mountain regions get snow, islands get damp and gusty, and many tourist areas shut seasonally. Cities stay lively and make the best base for winter travel.
