Galataport is a world-class cruise ship terminal and waterfront district located along the Bosphorus Strait in the heart of Karaköy, a vibrant neighborhood on the European side of Istanbul. It is also the world’s first underground cruise ship terminal and a feat of engineering genius.

This port lies near the entrance to the Golden Horn, only a short distance from famous landmarks like the Galata Tower, Taksim Square, and the historic Sultanahmet district, making it an ideal gateway for tourists arriving by sea.

Where do the cruise ships dock in Istanbul?

There are two ports in Istanbul where cruise ships dock.

Galataport is the primary terminal for large cruise liners in Istanbul. Another option is Sarayburnu Port, located near the Topkapi Palace in the Sultanahmet district, closer to the city’s historic centre.

Most cruise operators prioritize Galataport because of its accessibility and the convenience it offers passengers upon disembarkation.

Beyond the cruise terminal, Galataport features luxury hotels, high-end shops, restaurants, art galleries, and event spaces, creating a vibrant destination for locals and tourists alike. It also provides easy access to nearby attractions, such as the Istanbul Modern Art Museum and the Galata Bridge.

Brief History of Galataport

Galataport stands on a site that has been historically significant for centuries. In the Ottoman era, Karaköy served as a busy trading hub and port, but over time, the area became neglected.

In 2013, the Turkish government launched the Galataport Project, aiming to redevelop the waterfront into a modern cruise terminal, shopping area, and cultural destination. After years of construction, the port officially opened in October 2021, transforming Karaköy’s historic coastline into a lively and accessible public space.

How Galataport Works

Galataport is a state-of-the-art cruise port, designed with an innovative underground terminal system. Unlike traditional cruise ports, the customs and check-in areas are built below ground, maximizing waterfront space.

When a cruise ship docks, passengers disembark directly into the underground terminal for customs processing, then take escalators or elevators up to the main promenade. This design allows the 2 km-long waterfront to remain open for public use, even while ships are in port.

The disembarkation process from a cruise ship is as follows:

  • Arrival and Docking:
Cruise ships dock along Galataport’s 2-kilometre-long waterfront in Karaköy, right on the Bosphorus. The port can accommodate up to three large ships and 15,000 passengers at the same time.
  • Disembarkation and Underground Terminal Access:
Passengers exit the cruise ship through direct walkways that lead underground into the terminal. This system ensures that disembarking is smooth and avoids congestion on the upper levels. Crew, security staff and port agents guide passengers through the necessary checks.
  • Customs and Immigration Clearance:
Customs processing includes baggage screening and immigration control. Turkish officials verify passports and visas, if required, at the customs desks.

NOTE: On smaller ships your passports may be collected on board and processed for you. You will be told to take a photo of it before handing it in.

  • Access to Transportation and the City:
After clearing customs, passengers ascend from the underground terminal via elevators or escalators to the main waterfront promenade. The Karaköy neighborhood is immediately accessible, with attractions such as the Galata Tower and Taksim Square nearby. From the terminal, passengers can easily access taxis, public transport (like trams and ferries), or pre-arranged shore excursions. The port also offers luggage storage facilities for those who want to explore the city without their bags.
  • Reboarding or Departure:
For those embarking on a cruise, the same underground system handles check-ins and security screening before boarding. If passengers are only in Istanbul for a day, they return to the ship via the same direct access points by the scheduled departure time.

NOTE:  You will have to go through security/bag checks to re-enter the complex from the street
