Where is Rethymnon and how do you get there?

Rethymnon is a city and region located on the northern coast of Crete, the largest island in Greece. It is located halfway between the two major cities of Chania to the west and Heraklion to the east.

How to get to Rethymnon:

From Athens, you can travel to Rethymnon by plane or ferry.

Flying:

Flights from Athens International Airport (ATH) go to either Chania International Airport (CHQ) or Heraklion International Airport (HER). The flight takes approximately 50 minutes.

Ferry:

If you prefer ferries, you can take one from Piraeus Port in Athens to either Souda Port in Chania or Heraklion Port. The ferry ride typically takes 8-10 hours, usually overnight, and from there, you can drive or take a bus to Rethymnon.

If you are traveling from other Greek islands there are ferry connections during the tourist season from Santorini, Milos and other Cycladic Islands from Heraklion and a direct connection with Rethymnon from Santorini.

There are also ferries to Crete from Rhodes to Sitia and Kithera to Kissamos,  From these ports, you can easily continue to Rethymnon by car or bus.

Driving:

From Chania, it’s about 1 hour by car  (roughly 60 km/37 miles) to Rethymnon. From Heraklion it takes around 1.5 hours (about 81 km/50 miles).

From Chania, Rethymnon is around an hour by car along the National Road (E75), covering a distance of approximately 60 km (37 miles). Alternatively, frequent KTEL buses connect Chania and Rethymnon.

What makes it special?

Rethymnon is a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it one of Crete’s most special destinations. While similar in many ways to Chania it is smaller and much less crowded.

Its Venetian and Ottoman heritage is evident in the well-preserved Old Town, with cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured buildings, and landmarks like the Fortezza Fortress and the picturesque Venetian harbour.

The city is rich in culture with vibrant waterfront tavernas, historic sites like the Neratze Mosque, and cultural experiences like the Renaissance Festival.

Rethymnon also has easy access to stunning beaches, from lively, long stretches to secluded coves. Its central location on the north coast also makes it a great base to explore many of the wonders of Crete. Within 2 hours east, south and west you can visit almost all of the main attractions of Crete.

Getting around

Rethymnon offers a variety of transportation options for both residents and visitors:

Walking: Rethymnon’s Old Town is particularly pedestrian-friendly, with its narrow streets, historic sites, and vibrant atmosphere best experienced on foot. Walking is often the most convenient way to explore the city’s central areas. For many people visiting Rethymnon, this is the only form of transport they use.

Public Buses: The primary mode of public transportation in Rethymnon is the bus system operated by KTEL. There are two main services:

  • Urban Buses: These buses serve the city of Rethymnon and nearby areas, operating from early morning until late at night.
  • Intercity Buses: KTEL buses connect Rethymnon to other major cities and towns across Crete, including Chania, Heraklion, and various villages. For example, the fare from Rethymnon to Heraklion is approximately €7.60, and from Rethymnon to Chania, it’s about €6.20.

Taxis: Taxis are readily available throughout Rethymnon. To avoid misunderstandings, agree on the fare before starting your journey. For longer trips, such as from Rethymnon to Heraklion or Chania airports, the fare is approximately €90, with a travel time of around 45 minutes.

Car Rentals: Renting a car provides flexibility to explore Rethymnon and the broader region at your own pace. Numerous car rental agencies operate in the city, offering a range of vehicles to suit different needs. Prices vary depending on the season and vehicle type, so booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist periods.

Bicycles and Scooters: Renting bicycles or scooters is a popular option for shorter distances and a more intimate exploration of the city. Several rental shops in Rethymnon offer these services, allowing you to easily navigate the city’s narrow streets and scenic routes.

Boat Services: While Rethymnon has a port, ferry services are more frequent from the larger ports of Heraklion and Chania. However, during the tourist season, there are occasional boat trips and excursions available from Rethymnon’s port to nearby attractions and islands.

    Where to stay in Rethymnon

When choosing where to stay in Rethymnon, the following neighbourhoods each offer unique experiences. We prefer the Old Town but there are other areas as well.

Old Town (Palia Poli): The heart of Rethymnon, characterized by its Venetian and Ottoman architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and vibrant atmosphere. By staying here you will be within walking distance of historical sites, boutique, museumes, galleries, shops, and numerous cafes and tavernas.

Here we love the places right on the Venetian Harbour like Vista Del Porto and Porto Entiko Suites where you can sit on the balconies and watch the activity at the harbour, listening to the roving musicians in summer.

In the back streets Rimondi Boutique Hotel, Casa Delfini and Erotokritos Hotels are all small and very charming while Hotel Ideon is a larger hotel, with sea views, right across from the harbour and public carpark.

Seafront (Paralia): Stretching along the coastline north, this area has a number of hotels with great sea views and easy access to the beach. The seafront promenade is lined with restaurants, bars, and shops, making it perfect for travellers who are looking for both beach time and nightlife.

Kriti Beach Hotel and Aquila Porto are 5-star hotels right across from the beach with loads of amenities while Calla Luxury Suites and Summer Dream both have family rooms.

Perivolia: Located just east of the city center past the Paralia area Perivolia is a quiet residential neighbourhood with a more local atmosphere. It offers a mix of hotels and vacation rentals, with easy access to less crowded beaches. You will find more apartments and self-contained accommodation here so it is good for families and groups.

Here Ilian Beach & Apartments is a very affordable option with a big pool and rooms that can sleep up to five.

    Hotel Ideon

    How long to stay?

Rethymnon is not just a charming small city but it is also very centrally located to see many of the best sights and attractions on Crete. Therefore, we recommend staying at least 3 nights if possible.
