What is Zagori and where is it?
Zagori is a stunning region in the Epirus area of northwestern Greece, characterized by rugged mountains, dense forests, and deep gorges—including the impressive Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world. Zagori offers a rare combination of natural wonders and cultural richness. The region is dotted with 46 traditional stone villages, collectively known as the Zagorochoria, famed for their distinctive architecture, picturesque stone bridges, and cobbled streets.
Within Zagori lies the Vikos–Aoös Geopark, a designated UNESCO Global Geopark that recognizes the area’s unique geological features, diverse ecosystems, and rich biodiversity. The UNESCO status of the geopark highlights Zagori’s natural significance and supports sustainable tourism and environmental education, helping to preserve its breathtaking landscapes for future generations. This UNESCO recognition complements ongoing efforts to nominate Zagori as a World Heritage Site, aiming to protect its historical villages and unique ecological value on a global scale.
Located approximately 450 kilometers (about a 5-hour drive) northwest of Athens and just 30 kilometers (a 40-minute drive) northeast of the city of Ioannina, Zagori is easily accessible from Ioannina, making it a popular destination for both locals and international visitors.
When to visit
Late spring – May to June, or early autumn are considered the best months to experience Zagori’s natural beauty and outdoor adventures.
There are four distinct seasons in this part of Greece which are mostly like this:
Spring (April to June): Spring is ideal for hiking and exploring, as the weather is mild, and wildflowers bloom across the landscape. Temperatures range from 10-25°C (50-77°F), with cooler mornings and evenings.
Summer (July to August): Summer brings warmer weather, with temperatures ranging from 20-30°C (68-86°F) during the day. This is the peak season, great for outdoor activities like hiking, rafting, and swimming in the Aoös River, though some trails may be busier.
Autumn (September to October): Autumn is also popular, offering cooler temperatures (10-20°C or 50-68°F) and beautiful foliage as the leaves change color. This season is great for trekking and enjoying quieter trails.
Winter (November to March): Winter can be cold and snowy, with temperatures often dropping to around 0°C (32°F) or lower in higher altitudes, making it a quieter time. It’s ideal for those interested in winter scenery and cozy village stays, but outdoor activities are limited.
Getting around Zagori
Getting around Zagori can be challenging, as the region’s mountainous terrain and dispersed villages mean public transportation options are limited. Here are some of the best ways to explore the area:
Car Rental: Renting a car is the most convenient way to travel around Zagori, giving you the flexibility to explore the villages, scenic routes, and natural landmarks at your own pace. Many travellers rent a car from Ioannina, where the closest airport is located, and drive into the Zagori region. Be prepared for narrow, winding mountain roads, which are generally well-maintained but can require cautious driving.
Taxi or Private Transfer: Taxis are available from Ioannina to the Zagori villages, but they can be expensive for multiple trips. Private transfers can also be arranged if you prefer not to drive, although this is more costly than renting a car.
Local Hiking Trails: Many of the villages in Zagori are connected by well-marked hiking trails, making it possible to explore on foot if you’re up for some trekking. For example, the trails between villages like Papigo, Monodendri, and Vikos are popular with hikers. This is a great option for adventure seekers and those wanting to experience Zagori’s natural beauty up close.
Guided Tours: If you’re interested in a structured way to see the highlights without needing to navigate yourself, joining a guided tour can be a good option. Some local operators offer day trips or multi-day tours that include transportation, guiding you to major attractions like Vikos Gorge and the traditional villages. They can even take you on a tour of the many highlights of Epirus including the coastal towns of Parga and Sivota and the Ioanian Islands like Lefkada.

Papingo (Mikro and Megalo Papingo)

Apart from exploring the Zagorochoria (villages), the area’s major activities include hiking and various related outdoor activities. There are also some interesting monuments and hidden attractions in the area:
Hiking and Trekking
Zagori is known for its extensive network of hiking trails connecting the villages and natural landmarks. The Vikos Gorge Trail, Voidomatis Springs Trail, and routes between Papigo and Mikro Papigo are especially popular. The paths take you through diverse landscapes, with views of rivers, forests, and mountains.
Vikos Gorge
One of Zagori’s most iconic attractions, Vikos Gorge is among the deepest gorges in the world. Hiking through the gorge or enjoying the views from lookout points like Oxia and Beloï is a must. The gorge is part of the Vikos–Aoös National Park and offers trails for various skill levels.

Beyond Vikos Gorge, this park includes several ecosystems, such as alpine meadows, rivers, and dense forests. It’s a protected area rich in biodiversity, making it perfect for nature walks, bird-watching, and wildlife spotting.
Rafting and Kayaking on the Voidomatis River
The Voidomatis River is known for its crystal-clear waters and serene beauty. Rafting or kayaking here is a refreshing experience, with calm waters suitable for beginners and scenic surroundings through the gorge.
Stone Arch Bridges
Zagori is famous for its beautiful stone arch bridges, many of which were built centuries ago to connect the villages. The most famous are the Kalogeriko (or Plakidas) Bridge, Kokkori Bridge, and Missios Bridge, each offering picturesque views and photo opportunities.
Astraka Mountain and Dragon Lake (Drakolimni)
For more advanced hikers, the trek from Mikro Papigo to Astraka Refuge and then up to Dragon Lake is a fantastic experience. The lake sits at an altitude of around 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) and offers stunning views over the mountains.
Monasteries and Churches
Zagori is home to several historic monasteries and churches, such as the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Monodendri, perched on the edge of Vikos Gorge. These sites often feature beautiful frescoes, stone architecture, and historical significance.
Local Gastronomy and Taverns
Zagori offers a delicious array of local dishes, such as pies (pites), game meats, and traditional sweets. Visiting local taverns is a great way to experience the regional cuisine, with fresh ingredients and recipes that have been passed down for generations.

There is a surprising number of hotels to stay in the area and a wide range of price points to suit all budgets.
The hotels are generally restored stone houses or new ones built in the traditional Zagorochoria style and are very charming. Most are family run by locals and the warm hospitality means a stay in Zagori is truly unforgettable.
There are a small number of 5-star boutique hotels such as Kores Hotel & Spa and Zagori Suites in Vitsa as well as Apeiros Chora in Kato Pedina. These are very affordable compared to many parts of Greece too.
Great mid-range hotels we recommend are MounTrace Suites and Spa in Monodendri, Aristi Mountain Resort in Aristi and Archontiko Geki 1876 in Papingo.
There are a lot of options for budget travellers too – Petroto in Fragkades is a majestic manor house with incredible views and Astraka Guesthouse in Papingo often has rooms for under 100euro for much of the year. We also love Konstantinou & Elenis rooms in Monodendri which is very central to everything.
