Meteora
Located in Central Greece around 4 hours north of Athens is one of the most amazing sites in Europe. The Monasteries of Meteora tower over the fertile plains of Thessaly and the town of Kalambaka built incredibly on stunning rock formations projecting up out of the ground.
There is nothing quite like it anywhere else!
Often described as stunning works of architecture set in a landscape that is as unique as it is breath-taking, the six monasteries of Meteora are visited every year by many tourists yet still seem uncrowded and completely accessible.
They also represent an important part of Greek history and the link between the early formation of Christian doctrine and the Turkish occupation of Greece during the 11th century AD.

What to expect
• Lots of stairs
Every monastery involves climbing. Some have 100 plus steps carved into rock. It is manageable for most people with moderate fitness, but it is not flat, and it is not pram friendly.
• A strict dress code
• Narrow roads and limited parking
- Stunning viewpoints without climbing
Sunset is particularly impressive.
• Basic facilities
Toilets are available inside most monasteries but cafés are not. Bring water, especially in summer.
• Crowds in the middle of the day
Late morning to mid afternoon is busiest. If you want photos without 200 people in them, go early or stay overnight.
In short, expect steps, modest clothing, queues in summer, dramatic scenery, and a place that feels far more spiritual than your average archaeological site.

Where to stay in Meteora
What is there to do at Meteora?
While Meteora is famous for its extraordinary monastries there is actually a lot to do in the area! See the full Guide below.
Can you see Meteora on a day trip from Athens?
You can and there are many tours available but we really recommend staying at least one night.
The sunsets are magica and the local towns are authentic and peaceful once all the tour buses have gone.
Can I visit Meteora with mobility issues?
Yes you can
There is one monastery, St Stephens, which has only 2 steps to climb.
The others have many steps and may be a challenge but it is more than worthwhile to visit even when they are closed, to watch the sunset or sunrise from the ring road.
