Where is Matala and What is it Known For
Matala is a picturesque village located on the southern coast of Crete, about 65 kilometers southwest of Heraklion, the island’s capital. It sits in the region of Phaistos, one of Crete’s most significant archaeological areas.
Once a small fishing village, Matala rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s when it became a haven for hippies seeking a simple, carefree lifestyle by the sea. In fact Matala has attracted numerous famous individuals, particularly during its hippie heyday in the 1960s and 1970s. Bob Dylan’s connection to Matala is well-documented, but he wasn’t the only celebrity to find inspiration here. Other notable figures include Cat Stevens and Joni Mitchell, all of whom spent time living the caves and writing music when part of the hippy community.
The village is most famous for its stunning beach, golden sands, and the unique sandstone caves carved into the cliffs that flank the shore. These caves, believed to date back to the Neolithic period, were used as homes by hippies during the countercultural movement, adding to Matala’s mystique and allure. Today, the caves are a protected archaeological site, and the village still retains its relaxed, artistic vibe.
Matala is also closely associated with Greek mythology. According to legend, Zeus, disguised as a bull, brought Europa to the shores of Matala. The mythological ties and the village’s bohemian history have made it a beloved destination for both history buffs and free spirits.
How to Get to Matala
Getting to Matala is relatively straightforward, whether you’re coming from Heraklion or other parts of Crete.
By Car
The easiest way to reach Matala is by car. From Heraklion, the drive takes about 1.5 hours. Follow the signs to Moires and then continue to Matala. The roads are well-maintained, and the scenic drive through Cretan villages and olive groves is a treat in itself.
By Bus
Public buses connect Matala to Heraklion and other major towns on the island. The KTEL buses are reliable and affordable, with several daily departures from Heraklion to Matala. The journey takes around two hours and offers a comfortable way to enjoy the Cretan countryside.
By Taxi
For a more convenient but pricier option, taxis are available from Heraklion and other nearby towns. Always agree on a price beforehand or ensure the meter is running to avoid surprises.
By Organized Tour
Many tour operators offer day trips to Matala from Heraklion and other popular tourist hubs like Rethymno and Chania. These tours often include stops at nearby attractions such as the archaeological site of Phaistos or Kommos Beach, making them an excellent option for first-time visitors.

Things to Do in Matala
Explore the Famous Caves
One of the highlights of Matala is the famous caves carved into the cliffs overlooking the beach. These caves, once tombs in the Roman era, were later inhabited by the hippies who made Matala their home in the 1960s. As noted above famous cave residents included Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens.
Today, you can wander through the caves (although sometimes they are blocked off for safety reasons),marvel at their historical significance, and enjoy panoramic views of the Libyan Sea.
Relax on Matala Beach
Matala Beach’s golden sands and crystal-clear waters make it the perfect spot for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkelling.
The beach is well-organized, with umbrellas, sunbeds, and beachfront tavernas offering refreshments. The atmosphere is lively but not overcrowded, making it ideal for families and solo travellers alike.
Discover Red Beach
A short hike or boat ride from Matala will take you to Red Beach, a secluded and stunning stretch of sand named for its distinctive reddish hue. Known for its natural beauty and tranquillity, Red Beach is a favourite among naturists and those seeking a quieter escape.
Visit the Archaeological Site of Phaistos
History enthusiasts should visit the nearby archaeological site of Phaistos, one of Crete’s most important Minoan palaces. The site offers fascinating insights into ancient Cretan civilization and boasts breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Stroll Through the Village
Matala’s charming village is a joy to explore. Its narrow streets are lined with colourful murals on the roads and footpaths, quaint shops selling handmade crafts, and cozy cafes serving traditional Cretan cuisine. Don’t forget to snap a photo at the iconic “Today is Life, Tomorrow Never Comes” mural, a nod to Matala’s carefree spirit.
Attend the Matala Beach Festival
If you’re lucky enough to visit in June, don’t miss the Matala Beach Festival. This annual event celebrates the village’s hippie heritage with live music, art exhibitions, and plenty of food and drink. It’s a vibrant and colourful experience that draws visitors from all over the world.
