EPIRUS
Nestled between towering mountains and the sparkling Ionian Sea, Epirus is a land of untouched beauty and ancient mystery.
This lesser-known region in northwestern Greece offers an irresistible blend of rugged landscapes, traditional villages, and a rich history that dates back to the time of the Molossian kings.
While the beaches of the Greek islands might get the most attention, Epirus also rewards the curious traveller with forested gorges, serene lakes, and some of the country’s most scenic mountain towns.
Hikers will fall in love with the legendary Vikos Gorge, said to be the deepest canyon in the world. At the same time, culture lovers can wander the cobblestone streets of Ioannina, a lakeside city with a fascinating Ottoman past.
Epirus is also a gastronomic paradise, known for hearty pies, mountain cheeses, and its unique take on Greek hospitality.
Whether exploring the ruins of ancient Dodona, the sacred oracle of Zeus or enjoying a quiet retreat in the traditional stone villages of Zagori, Epirus invites you to slow down and embrace a side of Greece few have experienced.

What to expect
• Wild, dramatic landscapes: This is Greece turned up to eleven, towering mountains, deep gorges, rivers, forests and a sense that nature is very much in charge.
• Zagori villages and stone bridges: The villages of Zagori feel untouched by time, slate-roof houses, arched stone bridges and walking trails linking them like a medieval road network.
• Serious outdoor adventure: Home to Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world, plus hiking, rafting on the Voidomatis River and winter snow in the mountains.
• Authentic food, no theatre: Hearty mountain cooking, pies are the regional religion, slow-cooked meats, wild greens and local cheeses. This is not diet food, but it is delicious food.
• Ioannina as the cultural hub: Ioannina mixes Ottoman history, a lively university scene, lakefront walks and excellent cafes, without feeling polished for tourists.
• A quieter coastline: Epirus beaches are clear, rugged and far less developed than the islands, with places like Dhermi and Syvota offering serious scenery and space to breathe.
• Fewer tourists, more locals: Epirus feels refreshingly real, slower, more traditional and far less crowded than southern or island Greece.
